Methodology & data sources
Climate data. All figures are climate normals computed from the Open-Meteo Historical Weather API (ERA5 reanalysis by ECMWF). For every destination we aggregate daily values from January 2019 to December 2024 into monthly averages: daytime high/low, mean temperature, rainfall total, rainy days (≥1 mm), sunshine hours, relative humidity, wind, and snow days.
City data. Destination names, coordinates and populations come from GeoNames (CC BY 4.0).
Travel score (0–10). A transparent formula, identical for every destination: start from daytime-high comfort (peak score for 18–27 °C highs, penalties as it gets colder or hotter, with an extra penalty for hot + humid), subtract a rain penalty (up to −4 for very rainy months), and add a sunshine bonus (up to +1.5). The score is descriptive of outdoor sightseeing comfort — ski destinations or festival trips follow different logic.
Daylight. Day length is computed astronomically for the 15th of each month from the destination's latitude.
Limitations. Six years is shorter than the WMO's 30-year normal window, so values may differ slightly from official normals; microclimates within large regions are not captured; actual conditions vary year to year. We show data for the city's reference coordinates.
